The clock starts shortly after the call is connected and stops when the first ambulance or responder arrives. The ambulance service decides which category each call falls into. Figures are for the whole of Yorkshire Ambulance Service, not only Hull and the East Riding.
Answering 999 calls
- 18 seconds average time to answer (England: 7 seconds)
- 1 in 10 callers waited longer than 72 seconds (England: 18 seconds)
Handing patients over, September 2026
Across England the average handover took 30 min, and 27% took longer than 30 minutes.
While an ambulance waits outside a hospital it cannot go to the next call. These figures cover every hospital the service takes patients to, and are not published here for each hospital separately.
How long did the ambulance take?
If an ambulance was called for you or someone you were with, you can log how long it took to arrive and how long the wait was at hospital, once it is over. Figures appear once 10 people have.
Kept fair
- Times only. We never ask what was wrong, who the patient was or which crew came.
- The most urgent go first. A long wait for a less urgent call can be the system working as it should.
- Never during an emergency. Call 999 first. Log what happened afterwards, once everyone is safe.
- Nothing goes to the ambulance service. Logging here does not report or chase anything.
