Reading these figures fairly

  • Some cases were still open. The figures were taken in July 2026. Crimes still being investigated then may yet end in a charge, so the charged figures will rise. This matters most for rape and other serious crimes, which take longest.
  • A crime closed is not always a crime ignored. Some victims do not want to take things further, and some crimes leave nothing to go on.
  • Some crimes are found by the police themselves. Drug and weapon possession are usually recorded when someone is caught, so most have a suspect from the start.
  • Forces record crime differently. A force that records more minor crime will show a lower share charged.
  • There is no national standard for how many crimes should end in a charge, so figures are coloured against England and Wales only.
