Reading these figures fairly

  • Not seen does not mean turned away. Some people use a private dentist and some choose not to go. These figures cannot tell those apart from people who tried and could not get an NHS appointment.
  • Children are advised to go every year and adults at least every two years, which is why the two figures cover different periods.
  • Urgent treatment is a warning sign. A higher share of urgent treatments can mean more people are only being seen once they are in pain.
  • There is no national standard for how many people should be seen, so figures are coloured against England only: green is better, red is worse and black is about the same.
  • By where people live. A Hull resident treated by a dentist in Beverley counts for Hull.

What isn't published

There are no published figures for how many practices are taking new NHS patients, how long people wait to join one, or how far they travel.
